Local News Mt. Airy's Antique Coca Cola Sign

Anonymous writes "Mt. Airy, North Carolina, has a wonderful antique Coca Cola sign on the side of a hair care building on Main Street. The sign is clearly visible from Main Street and runs along a walkway to the public parking area. These "ghost" signs, as they are called out West, are very popular tourist attractions on Route 66 once they are repainted and restored. Moreover, they are popular sites in Southeastern cities including Roanoke, Virginia and Cartersville, Georgia, as well.

Mt. Airy is the childhood home of Andy Griffith and the real-life inspiration for Mayberry. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the original sign in Andy Griffith's hometown were restored?

A Yahoo Group (with a photo of the sign) has been set up to discuss restoring the historic Coca Cola sign at:

Local Politics TAKE TIME TO SALUTE THE FARMERS IN YOUR COMMUNITY

By Rep. Virginia Foxx It is often too easy to take what we have for granted. When was the last time you thought about all of the steps that went into producing the food on your dinner table? And when was the last time you considered all of the hard work that went into making the textiles for your clothes?

Our food and fiber does not just land on the store shelves or magically appear in our refrigerators and closets. Rather, they are the fruits of the labor of our nation?s farmers.

Local Politics WHY WE MUST FIX SOCIAL SECURITY

By Rep. Virginia Foxx You hear a lot of talk in Washington these days about Social Security reform. There are a lot of strong opinions coming from all directions. My personal philosophy is that the best ideas don?t come from Washington; they come from places like the Fifth District of North Carolina. I happen to think that there is more common sense to be found any morning in the Bojangles in Jonesville than the entire city of Washington, D.C. That is why I commute to Washington to vote, but return home every chance I get. The more time I spend in the district, the better I can represent the people I serve.

Opinion WE MUST STOP ISSUING DRIVER'S LICENSES TO ILLEGAL ALIENS

Rep. Virginia FoxxBy Rep. Virginia Foxx - We have a serious problem here in North Carolina - a problem that can have serious ramifications on our national security.

According to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, we live in one of 10 states that permits anyone to receive state issued driver's licenses or identification cards without providing proof of their legal status.

While this may at first seem insignificant, you may recall that each of the terrorists who hijacked the airplanes on Sept. 11, 2001 held valid driver's licenses or identification cards. Those little pieces of plastic granted a false sense of legitimacy and helped the terrorists breeze right through security.

You would think that we would have learned our lesson.

Note: This is the first edition of Rep. Virginia Foxx's monthly op-ed column, The Foxx Report. Virginia Foxx is a United States Representative from North Carolina?s Fifth Congressional District. You may contact her district office toll free at 1-866-677-8968 or her Washington office at (202) 225-2071.
